The Year of Living Dangerously - 1983 115 minutes. Directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hunt. The movie tells the story of a small group of Western journalists and diplomats in Jakarta, Indonesia in the early 1960s. In the scene where Mel Gibson meets Sigourney Weaver for the first time, he makes a remark about "some damn fool" playing the bagpipe while a riotous mob attacked the British Embassy. Turns out the damn fool was her military attaché at the embassy who plays later on at a New Year's Party. A very good movie for which Linda Hunt received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

The Year of the French - (???). RTE/Channel 4/ORTF (France) co-production, features orchestral score with  The Chieftains . The pipes are an integral part of the film score and of the spirit of the novel and series.

The Yellow Submarine - 1968 Toward the end of the movie, the Beatles are trying to sneak out of the Blue Meanies' camp, and someone trips on something, and a set of pipes goes bouncing down the hill, emitting loud squeals at each bounce, which of course wakes up one of the Meanies' watchdogs(?), who starts screaming the alarm. There may be another piping sequence earlier in the film, possibly in the Sea of Monsters.

The Young Lions - 1958 167 minutes. Directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Marlon Brando, Mongomery Clift, Dean Martin and Hope Lange, this is an excellent war movie about the British breakout in North Africa. There is a spectacular battle scene at night with shells bursting all around, and a piper playing Scotland the Brave.

The Young Ones - a British TV comedy about four guys who are enrolled in Scumbag College. In the last episode, Vyvian's pet hamster gets killed and as his spirit floats up to heaven, there is a very short bit of bagpipes.

You're a Big Boy Now - featuring Rufus Harley (a piper who specializes in jazz).
