Asa’s Pension
Certificate (1836)

(transcription)

About this document

• Certificate of Pension issued March, 22, 1836 to Asa Webster

• Repository: No. W18329, Webster, Asa/Sally, cover Page Continental NH/VT, National Archives, Washington, D.C.
• Transcribed by Caronne Secord, Feb., 2000

• Comments:

Here is evidence that Asa eventually did receive the pension for which he had petitioned in 1832, though he did not receive any payment until March, 1836. He was to receive $41.55 per year, and it was retroactive to March 4, 1831. As a result, Asa received a large lump sum of $207.75 for the five years that had passed, as well as his first semi-annual payment of $20.77.

This $228.52 payment would have been enough to buy about a quarter of a small farm at that time.
