Asa’s Petition (1791)
(transcription)

This page shows a transcription of the petition to the government of Upper Canada in 1791 by Asa Webster for additional land as a United Empire Loyalist. An image of the petition is available.

About this document

• Transcription of Asa Webster’s 3 May 1791 petition.

• Petition 46 of Misc. "W" 1787-1795 (RG1, L3, Vol.547), Ontario Archives, Toronto, Ontario.
• Transcribed by Caronne Secord, Feb., 2000

• Comments:
To this point, Asa Webster had received 100 acres of land, apparently in Elizabethtown Township.

About 1788, the size of lot that each class of Loyalist was entitled to receive was adjusted upwards, as it became apparent that there was land to spare for this purpose. Asa, as a non-combatant Loyalist, was now entitled to 200 acres. In this petition he asked for, and was granted, his additional 100 acres.
